Navigating Infant Eczema: Our 6-Month-Old’s Journey with Dry Skin, Triggers, and Healing

When I became a mom, I thought I had a pretty good routine when it came to baby skincare. I was moisturizing daily, keeping my baby clean, and doing all the things you’re “supposed” to do.

But navigating eczema with my 6-month-old turned into a journey I didn’t expect—and one that taught me just how much there is to learn about infant skin, allergies, and triggers.

If you’re dealing with baby eczema or dry skin, I hope our story helps you feel less alone.

When I First Noticed My Baby’s Dry Skin

It all started at my 7-year-old’s birthday party.

We were having such a good time, all dressed up in Lilo and Stitch outfits, taking pictures and enjoying the moment. At some point, I noticed my baby had a little dryness on his cheeks.

Nothing major… so I grabbed some Aquaphor, applied it, and kept it moving.

During the party, everyone wanted to hold him. And while that’s normal, people kept pointing out how dry his legs looked. I remember thinking, “That’s strange, I moisturize him every day.”

At the time, I didn’t think too much of it. Looking back, that was probably one of the first signs something more was going on.

When Things Took a Turn

A few days later, everything escalated.

My son started scratching constantly—especially his face. That’s when I knew this wasn’t just dry skin anymore.

He developed:

  • Dark patches on both cheeks
  • Additional dark spots on his body
  • Constant itchiness and discomfort

His regular appointment wasn’t scheduled for another week and a half, but I knew I couldn’t wait. I called and requested an emergency same-day appointment.

That decision made a huge difference.

The Diagnosis: Eczema and Infection

At the appointment, I learned that his skin had actually become infected.

That was hard to hear because I thought I had been doing everything right. Still, it gave me clarity on what we were dealing with.

We were prescribed a cream to treat the infection and told to moisturize more frequently.

After about three weeks, the infection cleared—but his eczema didn’t.

That’s when we took the next steps and saw both an allergist and a dermatologist.

Identifying His Eczema Triggers

Seeing specialists was a turning point.

We were able to identify several triggers that were contributing to his eczema flare-ups:

  • Bacteria from our sheets and environment
  • Allergies in general
  • Foods I was eating while breastfeeding, specifically milk, eggs, and almonds

That last one really surprised me because those were foods I was eating almost every day. It made me realize how connected everything is when you’re breastfeeding and how it can impact your baby’s skin.

Building Our Infant Eczema Treatment Plan

From there, we had to completely shift how we were managing his skin.

It wasn’t just about lotion anymore—it became a full routine.

Our eczema treatment plan included:

  • Daily 30-minute baths to hydrate his skin
  • Moisturizing and sealing his skin within 3 minutes after every bath
  • A modified diet for me while breastfeeding (cutting out trigger foods)
  • Steroid creams to manage flare-ups
  • Dust mite pillow covers and a cleaner sleep environment
  • Daily allergy medication like Zyrtec or Benadryl (as recommended)

This was a big adjustment. It took time, consistency, and a lot of trial and error.

Getting the Whole Family Involved

I quickly realized I couldn’t do it all alone.

My mom came into town to help, which made such a difference. My daughter even plays a part—she helps with his long baths, and we turn it into a moment by playing bath songs to keep him calm and happy.

I also created a simple schedule so that when I’m not around, my husband can step in and follow the same routine.

Because consistency is everything when it comes to managing eczema.

Where We Are Now

After all the changes, all the learning, and all the effort… my son’s skin has recovered.

And I can honestly say—thank God.

This journey was overwhelming at times. It was emotional, especially seeing him uncomfortable and not knowing what was causing it at first.

But it also taught me:

  • To trust my instincts as a mom
  • To advocate for my child
  • And to not ignore the small signs

What I’ve Learned About Infant Eczema

If there’s one thing I’d share with another mom, it’s this:

Sometimes it’s not “just dry skin.”

Infant eczema can be tied to:

  • Allergies
  • Environmental triggers
  • Diet (especially while breastfeeding)
  • Skin care routines

And finding the cause can take time.

Final Thoughts

This experience was a huge learning process for me and my family, but it also brought us together in a new way.

If you’re currently dealing with eczema in infants, just know:

  • You’re not doing anything wrong
  • It may take time to figure out triggers
  • And it can get better with the right support and plan

I’m so grateful we found what works for him, and I’ll continue sharing more about this journey as we go.
